Maximising the space in your warehouse is ever-changing and ever-challenging. One option to increase the utilisation of space in your warehouse is push back racking.
Push back racking may not be a new concept but its popularity is on the rise. This type of pallet storage method allows pallets to be stored from 2 to 6 deep on either side of an aisle to give higher storage density than other types of racking such as selective pallet racking. What is Push back Racking?
Push back racking is composed of an engineered platform system with multiple carts. A pallet is place on the first platform then subsequent pallets are introduced to push back the initial pallet(s). Push back rack works on a last-in, first out (LIFO) basis. The platforms rest on carts that are moved to the picking positon on stainless wheels with the aid of gravity. This type of racking is usually found in the center aisle if double-sided system is used and against a wall if single-sided system is used. Carts nest on top of each other and usually slide back one pallet position every time a new pallet is added.
Creating More Space for Storage
Push back racking’s major advantage is the dramatic increase in warehouse storage space. It doesn’t allow high specificity as the same sku’s need to be used per level. It has similar benefits to drive-in racking.
Quick Loading
Because of push back rack’s open design, forklifts can deposit loads quickly. No reorganizing or removing items is required to make space for new loads as additional loading can push the previous items back. Moreover, travel time of forklift operators is often reduced due to the more compact nature of the racking.
Improved Inventory Control
Push back rack can enhance your inventory control. Because an exact number of products are placed in each rack a stocktake is a straight forward process. That said, if you storage small amounts of a wide product range then push back racking may not be for you.
